Serving Regardless of the Cost

Ways to Honor Our Nation's Heroes on Veterans Day

What’s your definition of a hero?

This word can conjure up a mixture of meanings—from caped superheroes to people in the spotlight for brave acts of kindness.

But a hero can also be described as someone who longs to make things better for another. One whose motivations come from a place of selflessness. One who isn’t seeking to outdo, but rather to serve.

It’s this kind of heroism that defines our nation’s 20 million Veterans living today—men and women who served regardless of what it required of them. These protectors willingly sacrificed family, safety, security, innocence, health—and so much more—for you and me.

Our Heroes

The Bible tells us this kind of heroism is hard to find:

“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.” Romans 5:7 (GNT)

But it’s not hard to find when you consider our Veterans. They are real heroes—not because they’re trying to be, but because heroism is a byproduct of their willingness to serve no matter what. To “possibly dare to die” to protect our nation is a revered quality. To sacrifice everything for the sake of others is a commitment worthy of honor.

Ways to Honor a Veteran

How can you show appreciation toward Veterans for their selfless acts of service? Here are some practical ways to get started this Veterans Day:

  1. Ask a Veteran about his or her time in the military and really listen to the answer.
  2. Visit a homebound Veteran and thank him or her for their service.
  3. Teach someone (a child, a friend, a neighbor) what it means to be a Veteran.
  4. Pray for those who have served and are currently serving.
  5. Hug your family, and tell them that it’s because of Veterans that you can.

Prayer of Gratitude

Jesus, thank you for our Veterans and their sacrificial service. They remind us of you, Lord, and your willingness to sacrifice yourself for us. We are forever grateful for the gifts of freedom and eternal life.
