4 Bible verses to help you trade weariness for true rest

Have you ever paused in your day to consider how tired you are?

Maybe you notice your fatigue around 3 p.m. Your workday might be winding down, but your day is far from over. Evenings filled with house chores, phone calls, homework, Bible studies, dinners with friends, family activities . . . There’s something different every night of the week!

Or maybe you realize how tired you are when you take that much-needed vacation. You relax, make memories, and have a great time. But when you return to your everyday schedule, it still feels like you hadn’t had a moment to rest in months. You might wonder, Is this my fault? Am I too busy?

If you’re as busy as most Americans, your schedule could probably stand to lose a few appointments. But when you take a closer look, you might discover that your perpetual tiredness is more than that. It’s weariness. This deep exhaustion of the soul tends to stick around.

Weariness is often the product of a heavy spiritual or emotional burden. Maybe you’ve prayed for years that your child would give their life to Christ—with no answer. Or maybe you’re watching a loved one endure a terrible illness. Maybe you’re a ministry leader who has worn yourself out caring for your church during the pandemic. Maybe you’re struggling in your faith and echoing the psalmist’s words to God: “I am worn out from calling for help, and my throat is aching. I have strained my eyes, looking for your help” (Psalm 69:3–4 GNT).

GOD’S WORD OFFERS TRUE REST FOR WEARY SOULS

God knows our hearts. He understands that our bodies are weak, and our souls are weary. And his Word offers us comfort.

Here are four verses to refresh you with the promises of your Heavenly Father:

God is not like you and me. He never grows weary, and he is always watching over us.

Don’t you know? Haven’t you heard?

The LORD is the everlasting God;

he created all the world.

He never grows tired or weary.

No one understands his thoughts.

Isaiah 40:28 GNT

You don’t need to carry your burdens any longer. Jesus invites you to bring all your worries and cares to him.

“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28 GNT

Life can be difficult, but the Bible offers encouragement and strength to help you persevere in doing good.

So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest.

Galatians 6:9 GNT

God promises that those who serve him faithfully will experience true rest.

“Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest.”

Matthew 11:29 GNT
