A Prayer for People in Crisis

He does not neglect the poor or ignore their suffering. (Psalm 22:24a CEV)

God of people in crisis, we know that your heart beats greatly for the marginalized, the outcast, the poor, widows, orphans, and those displaced. Throughout Scripture we see your continued commitment to those who are suffering.

You walked alongside the people of Israel when they sought freedom from slavery.

You listened to the cries of barren women.

You huddled in caves with David as he was being hunted down.

You took on shame by touching the lepers, the lame, the bleeding, people facing physical infirmities.

You pursued those rejected by religious leaders.

You advocated for the morally compromised and socially ostracized.

You remained with the disciples in a boat while a storm crashed and raged around them.

You cried with Mary and Martha as they grieved the death of their brother.

You gave yourself as hope, as true rest, as light to those lost, exhausted and in pain.

God of people in crisis, we know you care for those who are physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally suffering. We ask you to bring your healing and comfort to the following people and spaces:

To those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19, bring your healing and comfort.

To those who have been forced from their homes due to violence, fear, and instability, bring your healing and comfort.

To those facing famine, who have no food or drink, bring your healing and comfort.

To those whose families, communities, and nations have been ravaged by war and political volatility, bring your healing and comfort.

To those dealing with ongoing illnesses, pains, cancers, and other diseases, bring your healing and comfort.

To the innocent who endure the impact of evil and unjust leaders in power, bring your healing and comfort.

To those racially oppressed and diminished, bring your healing and comfort.

To those painfully abused by religious leaders, their partners, or family members, bring your healing and comfort.

To those battling depression, anxiety, fear, and mental breakdowns, bring your healing and comfort.

To those encountering economic hardships, bring your healing and comfort.

To those who feel all alone, who feel scared, who are overwhelmed, who are without hope, bring your healing and comfort.

God of people in crisis, we pray for your divine presence as we see the aching world around us. We know that you never leave us. We stand on your promises of redemption and renewal for the earth and its inhabitants. Help our hearts beat like yours for those in crisis. May our prayers, our time, our resources be directed towards helping them. We ask these things of you, God who walks with us, sees us, and cares for us.

Amen.
